Ever since I first learned about the sport while traveling in Cape Town – and witnessing Red Bull’s King of the Air competition – I had long wanted to pick up kiteboarding. Throughout my travels, I took a lesson here and there, but was always told it was one of those sports you needed to stick with and do consistently to properly pick it up.

After I wrapped up my yearlong journey, leading a Remote Year group of digital nomads around the world, I decided to take some time for myself before returning to American society and do some solo traveling on my way back to LA.

So I decided that would be the central purpose for my last hurrah – find a good kiteboarding spot in Mexico, stay there for a week, and learn. After some research, I landed on the best place for January (that also happened to be on the way back to California): La Ventana in Baja California Sur.

Baja Joe’s

Right next door to La Mezcalería is Baja Joe’s. By day, a chill by-the-beach hang (and kiteboarding shop) famous for its breakfast burritos. By night, a lit-up outdoor bar with live music and a friendly crowd.

Playa Central

Just up the road, Playa Central is a hotspot for shopping and kiteboard rentals during the day that turns into a Happy Hour / Open Mic / After Hours spot at night.

Here’s a map of my recommended places in La Ventana!
