One of the most epic, and doable, day trips from Lisbon is to the coast. Specifically, I highly recommend you take a Lisbon day trip to Cabo Da Roca – the westernmost point of continental Europe.
Not only is it cool to say, it’s stunningly beautiful and you can make the journey in style – hire a Jeep tour.
The roads that take you from Lisbon to Sintra are gorgeous – if you go by way of Cascais, you can marvel at the beautiful ocean views before heading into the more forested sections of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, or eventually the main portion of Sintra with its romantic palaces and grandiose architecture that looks straight out of a fairytale.
You can do this journey by train or car – but with a Jeep you get to see the “off the beaten [tourist trap] path” version too.
To be honest, we drank a lot of wine that day (Portugal, amirite?) so the exact details are a bit blurry. I enjoyed sitting back and letting the tour guides lead the way.
So instead of the exact route, I’ll just cover my favorite parts and share some links to help you book your own Portuguese Jeep Safari (like this one or this one).
Estrada Cabo Da Roca
The westernmost point of Europe. The nose of Portugal. Where land ends and the sea begins. I have a thing for views from high points, but the dramatic cliffs of Cabo Da Roca are particularly special. Aka don’t just go, take a picture, and leave. Spend some time walking along the path and admiring the various angles and views of the landscape below you, and marvel in the epic fact that you are more west than anyone else in Europe at that moment in time. And of course, take some pictures.
Boca do Inferno
On the northern side of Cascais, Portugal has its very own Boca do Inferno – literally Hell’s Mouth. With each wave, the crystal waters flood the natural structure, then get completely sucked back out – waning and waxing with the tide. It’s one of those tangible examples of the shear power of nature, and Mother Nature doing its thing.
Praia da Adraga
Past the Sintra hills, as you admire the beauty that is the Portuguese coastline, be sure to stop at Praia da Adraga – a beautiful beach just 5km north of Cabo da Roca (which you can apparently access via a walking trail along the cliffs). The beach – which, fun fact, is shaped like an elephant’s trunk – is surrounded by naturally-formed rock walls and arches, which conveniently provide nice shade if needed in the heat of summer. During low tide, you can even put your explorer’s cap on and adventure to a small cave.
Sintra in general is one of the best day trips from Lisbon, but if you’re looking for some extra adventure and some ocean breeze – sign up for a Jeep Safari.
